Sydney to Brisbane Rail Upgrade

The Australian Rail Track Corporation's upgrade of the North South rail network along Australia's east coast reduced rail transit times for freight trains, improved the reliability of transit times and increased the line capacity.

Laing O'Rourke, in joint venture with Balfour Beatty Australia, delivered the Brisbane to Sydney upgrade of this major infrastructure project. The works extended from Maitland in New South Wales to Acacia Ridge in Queensland.

FEATURES:

The scope of the works included:

  • Extension or building of 15 crossing loops to expand faster entry and exit speeds, upgrading of 18 existing loops so that 1500-metre trains can be accommodated.
  • Installation of 512,000 concrete sleepers to replace life expired timber sleepers.
  • Construction of new and extended crossing loops in the Hunter Valley for Coal Trains.
  • Rehabilitation work on bridges and other structures where necessary, and
  • Operational works focused on increasing curve superelevation and permitted cant deficiency to improve transit time.
