Ben Chifley Dam, New South Wales
The project involved the uprade of the dam to increase storage from 16,000 to 30,000ML and give a long-term secure water supply to Bathurst city and irrigators well into the 21st century.
FEATURES:
- main 29m high earthfill embankment and service spillway raised by 5.38m and extended by 60m, with 56,000cu.m of excavation and 250,000cu.m of zoned embankment construction
- construction of a 172m auxiliary spillway, with 200,000cu.m of earthworks, and 6 fuse plugs installed, varying in height from 4.4m to 11.7m
- new seepage collection and measurement weir constructed
- new permanent local roads and carpark.
BENEFITS:
- stronger and higher dam that can withstand a 1 in a million year flood event
- good safety record
- despite flood conditions, work completed with no adverse impact on the environment
- local labour and subcontractors employed.
