Brisbane, Queensland
This alliance project involved the upgrade of the approaches, departures and local access roads to Brisbane's landmark Story Bridge, to reduce congestion and ease traffic flow.
FEATURES:
The project involved the planning, community consultation, urban design, civil design and construction of intersection upgrades at Kangaroo Point, which comprised:
- widening the Bradfield Highway at Kangaroo Point from 4 to 6 lanes
- constructing a new signalised intersection at Cairns Street and the Bradfield Highway
- realigning Kangaroo Point's local roads, and
- widening the major road carriageways that approach and depart from the Fortitude Valley end of the Story Bridge.
BENEFITS:
Working in an alliance project delivery framework guaranteed a successful outcome and the client and the community are now sharing the benefits, including:
- improved access for vehicles approaching the Story Bridge from both the north and the south, with minimal disruption to traffic during construction work
- improved safety and access for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to Kangaroo Point and All Hallows School, and
- a comprehensive local road intersection upgrade solution that caters for traffic requirements both now and into the foreseeable future.
As an experienced alliance partner, the project team ensured that Brisbane City Council and the people of Brisbane achieved the best outcome. By creating a working environment of cooperation, respect and trust, and through extensive consultation with key stakeholders, the alliance team was able to propose an alternative traffic signal solution to the original, more expensive underpass proposition.
This has since gained wide community acceptance and resulted in significant additional work in the precinct to be carried out within the original budget.
