Sydney Harbour Immersed Tube Tunnel, New South Wales

In an Australian construction first, this immersed tube structure was installed  in consortium. The tunnel significantly reduced commuter times and traffic congestion on the Sydney Harbour Bridge as it has duplicated this transport corridor.

FEATURES:

  • 8 x 23,000t concrete tunnel units, 120m long, 26m wide and 7.5m deep, cast in a specially constructed dry dock at Port Kembla
  • units fitted with temporary steel bulkheads at each end, floated and towed 80km to Sydney Harbour
  • survey control, mooring winch towers and two lowering pontoons installed on the units
  • each unit supported on the previously placed unit at one end and on hydraulic jacks at the other, with sand pumped into space between unit and trench bottom
  • contract also included casting roadway slabs and ballast concrete inside the units.
