Brisbane, Queensland
The project included the restoration of the existing heritage listed ‘F’ Block. Over the years the building had suffered the ravages of extensive termite infestation and fire. The saw tooth roof trusses and clear story windows of the heritage listed building were the main areas for restoration together with the original press metal ceilings. Structural links were also reinstalled between ‘D’ Block and ‘F’ Block at various levels to provide disabled access.
FEATURES:
The project team worked closely with the design team to overcome detailing problems within the existing building. A number of initiatives were undertaken in the restoration process to bring the building back to its former glory. Initiatives included:
- employing specialist bricklayers to work on the existing facade
- removing sandstone window sills and timber windows from ‘D’ Block and reusing in ‘F’ Block where the original openings and frames were beyond repair.
BENEFITS:
Given the company’s experience with university works, the restoration was commenced after the end of year examination period to minimise disturbance to the students and to reduce safety risks.
