FEATURES:
Construction features and challenges include:
- structural steel frame with piled foundations formed within mangrove mud
- floor slabs consisting of precast concrete units with structural concrete topping to minimise the floor construction program
- revised baggage handling conveyor system to accommodate the existing airport functionality and incorporate the new design requirements for baggage screening
- co-ordination of construction services - from demolition of part of the existing terminal to the construction of new facilities within a fully operational terminal, and
- full recognition of the need to adhere to CPA's requirements for security and interface with the staff, passengers and general public.
BENEFITS:
- extensive experience in delivering projects of this magnitude with tight time schedules through managing and maximising existing relationships with suppliers and resources
- early examination of the design documentation enabled recommendation of various proposals to minimise time and provide cost savings
- arranged a computer generated modelling of the unit to ensure the client was totally comfortable with the baggage handling equipment purchase, and
- a higher number of flights will be able to access the airport due to the increased capacity of the new baggage handling unit
