This five-level extension to Brisbane’s Convention and Exhibition Centre will increase the Centre’s facilities by 50 per cent. On completion, it will be Australia’s only Centre with the ability to accommodate from 400 through to 8,000 delegates, providing greater flexibility in accommodating events of different sizes at the one time.
FEATURES:
The Expanded Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre will be Australia’s only Centre with three stand-alone plenary halls, and 42 meeting and event spaces. The extension will add five levels of boutique meeting and event spaces, including two levels dedicated to meetings and conventions. The existing Centre will remain operational during the construction phase. When completed, the expansion will yield an extra 24,000m2 for the Brisbane Convention Centre.
ROLE:
Laing O’Rourke is the sole contractor for this project. Laing O’Rourke’s subsidiary, Expanded, is performing the civil, piling and concrete structural works for this project.
BENEFITS:
The impact on the nearby retail traders, public events and the South Bank residential Urban Village community is being minimised through smart efficient planning and methodology analysis.
The construction is managed through Laing O’Rourke’s proven experience, causing minimal impact to South Bank civi space and transportation hubs as Grey Street is to remain open throughout the construction phase. Precise and effective planning is delivering minimum disruptions to a rail hub with the Southern train line running under the site.
Laing O’Rourke is currently working with the Architect to develop an alternative light-weight façade system to the Plenary Hall on the east elevation. Other areas of design innovation include an improved acoustic glazing system as well as coloured, precast concrete features to the west elevation.
