Darwin, Northern Territory
This project involved the design, documentation and construction of the redevelopment of Darwin's main hospital facility to a post-disaster category building, enabling the hospital to remain functional during and after cyclonic activity.
FEATURES:
- new medical facilities, including emergency dept, intensive care unit, high dependency unit, coronary care unit, imaging dept, operating theatres, same day procedure unit, sterilising dept and recovery areas
- installation of state of the art sterilizing equipment, communications, nurse call, security, medical gases an pneumatic tube system, and
- provision for additional carparking and access.
BENEFITS:
- substantial costs savings through an initiative to proof load the existing concrete structure, in lieu of an extensive upgrade of the existing concrete beams
- minimal disruption to the hospital due to a well developed decanting plan that has reduced number of relocations for a number of departments
- cost effective design, which has focused on buildability and careful material selection, and
- 2001 Excellence Awards from Institution of Engineers, Australia - Northern Division.
