Westpoint Blacktown opened in 1973 and has been a major retail and community hub in the local area for over 30 years. Laing O’Rourke managed the final $70 million design and construction of the retail giant’s $350 million redevelopment.
Works included the extension of approximately 50,000m2 of retail space, carpark extensions, and refurbishment of the existing centre. Working collaboratively with the client, Laing O’Rourke also assisted with the rectification and completion of works undertaken by a separate contractor.
Laing O’Rourke was contracted to manage the project as the design and construct contractor with a lump sum for preliminaries negotiated six months into the contract period.
At completion the entire redevelopment almost doubled the size of the centre.
FEATURES:
The $70 million works revitalised and expanded the current Westpoint Blacktown retail and transport hub. Works provided a further 50,000m2 of retail floor space, taking the total to 102,000m2. The carpark extension provided a total of 4800 spaces.
The centre boasts more than 300 specialty shops including major retail and entertainment tenants Franklins, Coles, Woolworths, Myer, Big W, Target and Hoyts.

Laing O’Rourke won the contract through a competitive bid process, where the team competed against four contractors. Laing O’Rourke’s key winning edge was the high level of retail design and construct experience that the senior management team and site team offered. From the outset, QIC and Laing O’Rourke worked in a cooperative and collaborative manner to mutually meet and achieve project objectives. The result was outstanding with all major milestones being met and cost budgets achieved.
