The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre offers a world-class facility featuring a main arena, exhibition halls, and meeting rooms. In 2008, in response to increasing demand, the client expanded on the purpose-built facility with an additional 3000m² of exhibition hall space.
At completion, the additional exhibition space and new associated amenities doubled the space of the exhibition hall.
The centre continued to be fully operational during the extension works. To minimise impact from the construction activities, a temporary structural steel acoustic end wall was erected between the new and existing structures.
Extension works included the construction of a structural steel frame erected over the existing concrete carpark structure and a new cantilevered concrete structure.
Complementing the existing centre, special features of the new works included:
- acoustic walls
- operable walls and ceilings
- installation of goods and passenger lifts
- coldrooms
- commercial kitchen facilities.
BENEFITS:
Working within an active environment brought a number of challenges for both the client and contractor.
As Principal Contractor, the Laing O’Rourke team provided the client with a number of value-add benefits over and above the expected expertise in construction, cost planning, quality, safety and environmental management.
The team also addressed and worked with the client, centre management and other stakeholders to achieve minimal impact through ongoing communications, relationship management, and detailed programming.
The end result was a tailored delivery method that achieved the client’s desired quality, budget and completion date, while also addressing the needs, requirements and daily schedule of the busy Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
