What are you doing out here?
The works themselves are the construction and maintenance of a 165-man construction camp and offices to actually carry out the works, which are 3 simply-supported bridges over Telegraph Creek, Big Mabel Creek and Fletchers Creek.
Can you tell us about the relationship Laing O’Rourke has with the locals?
We have a Memorandum of Understanding with the local indigenous community. We’ve got a number of local community members working on the project: from plant operators to peggies, and we have a number of trainees from the area as well.
What stands out about this project?
There was a very large Boab tree that the East Kimberley is famous for that was due to be cleared to make way for Telegraph Bridge. We ended up relocating a 750 year-old tree from the work site down to Kings Park in Perth. It was quite a proud day, really.
