The Laing O’Rourke-constructed Willawong Bus Depot won the Environment award at the Engineers Australia’s 2010 Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards held in Brisbane in October.
The $41 million Willawong Bus Depot is located on a 22-hectare remedial waste disposal site on Brisbane’s outskirts.
The depot, Brisbane’s largest bus facility, accommodates up to 200 buses and 400 staff.
The judges were impressed with the successful remediation of a highly contaminated toxic waste site, making it useable years ahead of projection.
The judges also noted the development of integrated water cycle plans, the measures taken to capture hydrocarbons deposited on the site, and enhanced biodiversity on the site.
SEQ Area Manager Glenn Rashleigh said Laing O’Rourke was delighted to have constructed this state-of-the-art bus depot.
“It’s the largest and most advanced depot in the southern hemisphere and makes use of the latest technology in all areas, from constructing on a highly contaminated site, to the latest facilities to maintain a modern bus fleet,” Glenn said.
Laing O’Rourke completed the Willawong Bus Depot in 2009.
The Engineering Excellence Awards program encourages and celebrates engineering excellence by identifying, recognising and promoting excellence in the science and practise of engineering.
