Laing O’Rourke has been recognised in Engineering Australia’s 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards.
Engineering Australia’s regional division ranked Infrastructure South’s work on NCIG Berths K8 and K9 in the Port of Newcastle as “Highly Commended”.
Regional Manager Paul McNerney congratulated everyone who worked on the project.
“We offer our clients an engineering-led business that is able to listen to their needs and provide innovative solutions,” Mr McNerney said.
“Receiving this sort of recognition aligns perfectly with our ambitions to be a leading engineering enterprise.”
The awards recognised the use of innovative engineering and acknowledged the ingenuity of the project team’s design and construction of a temporary jetty to install the marine piles and wharf superstructure.
This partially land-based construction method provided the client with a solution that significantly mitigated time, cost and interface issues.
The Laing O’Rourke solution also provided much safer working access for construction teams. Working over water remains a high risk activity and one that Laing O’Rourke has proven it can manage safely and successfully.
The $100 million project stretches over an 800 metre shoreline of the Hunter River. It was delivered on time and with zero Lost Time Injuries over 500,000 hours of work.
Its successful completion assisted Infrastructure South in winning another port project, the expansion of the Port Waratah Coal Facilities berth next door.
The team has also been asked to provide a solution for the final berth, K10.
Laing O’Rourke also delivered significant benefits to the local community during the delivery of the NCIG project, engaging 60 Hunter Valley subcontractors and suppliers and creating more than 150 jobs.
