Laing O’Rourke will build a new footbridge from the Yeerongpilly train station to the Queensland Tennis Centre, ensuring the safety of tennis fans during January’s Brisbane International Tennis Tournament early next year.
Transport Minister Rachel Nolan visited the Tennyson site in Brisbane on Thursday, July 8 to announce the $8 million project.
Ms Nolan said the footbridge would cross busy Fairfield Road providing a safe and accessible pedestrian link from the train station to the Queensland Tennis Centre.
She said the project team was working towards an iconic entryway with a strong tennis theme, given its association with the tennis centre.
“As most people travel by train for special events at the Queensland Tennis Centre, it is fitting that this new infrastructure will have a strong tennis theme,” Ms Nolan said.
Laing O’Rourke Infrastructure General Manager Stephen Wilson said the project would be a high-profile one for the company.
“Not only will the bridge cross a busy Brisbane road, it is also close to the company’s Moorooka office so staff who drive past it on their daily commute to work will see the progression of works during the six-month construction period.”
The project team will work to a tight timeframe to ensure the footbridge is completed in time for the 2011 Brisbane International Tennis Tournament in January.
Works are due to start on site within a week.
