A community event was held recently in the Northern Territory to mark the completion of Territory Alliance’s first package of works.
Territory Alliance – a partnership between Laing O'Rourke, Sitzler and McMahon working on the the Strategic Indigenous Housing Infrastructure Program – was supported by 22 local staff at different times, including work experience students.
The workers were presented with certificates and caps and thanked for their work at a special ceremony at Milikapiti in the Tiwi Islands, Northern Territory.
Site Manager Michael Zampa said the workers had put in a great effort.
“I’d like to thank the local community and Remote Housing for their support,” he said.
Department of Local Government, Housing and Regional Development Chief Executive Officer Ken Davies said it was a special occasion and he understood people were very pleased with their houses.
Mr Davies paid a special tribute to the work of the Milikapiti Housing Reference Group for providing advice to Housing and Territory Alliance staff.
Senior Traditional Owner Mary Elizabeth Moreen thanked Territory Alliance and said the workers had shown respect to the local people and produced good work.
Her comments were echoed by Senior Traditional Owner Matthew Wonaeamirri.
Territory Alliance started work in Milikapiti on the Tiwi Islands in April 2009 and completed 30 rebuilds, in some cases involving virtually rebuilding some of the houses.
A particular highlight was the support of the 22 local people who worked with Michael Zampa, Site Supervisor Andrew Pfitzner and contractors.
Each was presented with a Territory Alliance certificate recording their length of service and competencies gained.
The community event was followed by an Auskick clinic led by Territory Alliance community relations adviser and Tiwi Bombers coach Karl Gundersen.
