Award win for regional shopping centre refurbishment

The refurbishment of Toowoomba KMart Plaza has won the MBA (Downs and Western Region) award in the Renovation/Refurbishment ($4-$15 million) category.

The award was presented to the Laing O'Rourke team at an awards dinner in Toowoomba on Friday (July 23) night.

SWQ Regional Manager Stirling McConnel said the KMart Toowoomba refurbishment project involved the staged demolition and refurbishment of existing public malls and retail shop tenancies and construction of the new centre amenities.

The works also included the centre management offices, new switchroom and new tenancy switchboards, construction of a new ATM bunker and a carpark pedestrian ramp.

“Retail refurbishment is logistically challenging as the team needs to plan works around client and tenant requirements, and because the work is undertaken in an operating environment they need to create the least amount of disruption possible,” Mr McConnel said.

He said Laing O’Rourke’s long-standing presence in the Darling Downs region was a key factor in being awarded key projects in the area.

“We have established a strong reputation in South West Queensland and have very good sub-contractor relationships,” Mr McConnel said.

The project is now in the running for the Queensland MBA award, judged later in the year.
