January 5 2010

Laing O'Rourke, in joint venture with O'Donnell Griffin, has been awarded the $270 million Sunbury Rail Electrification Project, a major rail infrastructure upgrade in Victoria.

Victorian Premier John Brumby announced the project as part of a raft of public transport infrastructure projects planned for the state.

"I am delighted to announce that O'Donnell Griffin and Laing O'Rourke Electrification Joint Venture are the successful contractors to construct the $270 million Sunbury Electrification project as part of an alliance to improve rail services on the Sydenham-Sunbury corridor," Mr Brumby said.

He said the project was designed to help the transport system cope with the expected population boom in Melbourne's outskirts.

General Manager Rail Rob Boulger said Laing O'Rourke was pleased to be a part of the Victorian Government's drive to improve rail travel in Melbourne and to provide an integrated approach to public transport.

"Laing O'Rourke is the leading rail electrification company in Australia and this win further enhances our range of supply and services we can provide," Mr Boulger said.

The company was recently awarded a major rail electrification project in Auckland and continues to successfully deliver electrification works for QR in the Queensland coalfields and for RailCorp across New South Wales.

"It's an exciting time for Laing O'Rourke," Mr Boulger said.

The works are due to start in early 2010.
