$110 million marine project a boon for Laing ORourke's Townsville operations

March 31 2010

Laing O'Rourkes expansion into the Townsville region has been given a boost following the award of a $110 million contract to build a marine precinct in the north Queensland city.

On a visit to Townsville in March, Premier Anna Bligh announced Laing O'Rourke, in alliance with the Port of Townsville, as the preferred proponent for the construction of the precinct.

"This is a major vote of confidence in Townsville and cements the future of marine industries in the region," Ms Bligh said.

"It provides room for marine industries to expand and create new jobs and it secures existing jobs with a purpose built precinct.

"It will directly employ 400 people over the various stages of construction.

"In addition, the first stage to be completed by November, 2011, will preserve 500 existing jobs in marine industries.

She said the project also provided environmental advantages.

"Old sites along the river will be cleaned up and industries re-located to a dedicated facility based on environmental best practice. Vital marine and bird habitats will be protected," Ms Bligh said.

Laing O'Rourke's Executive Chairman Andrew Wilson said construction of the Townsville Marine Precinct Project was a critical step in the economic development of the Townsville region and the Port's role in the development of the Northern Economic Triangle.

"Laing O'Rourke officially opened its Townsville office in February 2010 after a detailed assessment of the long-term economic growth and infrastructure expansion planned for the region,” he said.

"Laing O'Rourke believes the underlying demand for the expansion of the Port of Townsville demonstrates the strong economic fundamentals of Townsville and the greater Townsville region.”

Port of Townsville Limited Chairman Ross Dunning said the project alliance with Laing O'Rourke would deliver a quality Marine Precinct on time and on budget.

"There are significant advantages in combining international best practice in construction with the local knowledge of our experienced Port engineering and major project teams," Mr Dunning said.

''Townsville's robust and diverse economy is underpinned by a strong industrial base, and infrastructure investment by the Government and the defence and university sectors.

"When you combine these factors it's a powerful proposition for investing in Townsville.''
