Work secured on WA LNG project

Laing O’Rourke was recently awarded the AUD$98 million contract to construct the General Utilities Project on Barrow Island, Western Australia for the Gorgon Project.

Laing O’Rourke’s contract includes the construction of on-site utilities infrastructure, including a new desalination plant, relocation of an existing water treatment facility, new waste water treatment plant, new diesel power station and associated utility corridor and connections.

The utility corridor and connections will service the new plant, construction camp and construction administration facilities.

The contract will see a multi-disciplined Laing O’Rourke team move to Barrow Island, off the Pilbara coast, in September 2010 for 12 months.

The team will deliver the civil, structural, mechanical, piping and electrical works for these services.

According to Laing O’Rourke’s Infrastructure Regional Manager (WA) Aidan Mullan, winning this contract was a boon for the company.

“We are proud to be part of this world class project,” Aidan said.

Barrow Island is a Class A nature reserve, which means the project team will have to adhere to extremely stringent environmental and quarantine requirements associated with access to, and work on, the island.

Aidan said his team was more than able to meet the challenges of this project.

“Laing O’Rourke specialises in delivering multi-disciplinary, technically complex projects in challenging environments. Our team is well placed to work on this exciting and vast project.”
