July 30 2007

Laing O’Rourke projects and people dominated the Downs and Western Region (Queensland) Master Builders Association (MBA) Awards, winning in seven categories.

The awards, held on July 28, netted Laing O'Rourke wins in the following categories:

  • Education Facilities (over $10m) for Southern Institute of TAFE - B Block
  • Health Facilities (over $10m) for Roma Aged Care Facility
  • Innovation in Environmental Management (Southern Institute of TAFE - B Block)
  • Innovation in Workplace Health & Safety (Southern Institute of TAFE - B Block)
  • Facilities for the Disabled (Roma Aged Care Facility)
  • Apprentice Employer of the Year
  • Apprentice of the Year - Nick Finch

South-west Queensland area manager Andrew Civil said the result showed the high level of respect for our projects from industry peers.

"It was a perfect way to continue to spread the Laing O'Rourke name in the Toowoomba region in front of a gathering of over 300 of our closest industry associates and competitors," he said.

"Congratulations to our project teams on these projects and to Apprentice of the Year Nick Finch who continues our proud involvement with the development of younger employees to become our future project leaders."

Nick, who recently completed his carpentry apprenticeship and has worked for the company for the past 18 months, is currently working on the Lockyer District State High School project.

He started his apprenticeship in the domestic sector but said his move to Laing O'Rourke and working on larger construction jobs had opened up many opportunities.

"It's more interesting because I'm working on bigger and more complex projects," Nick said. "Laing O'Rourke is a massive company and you can go anywhere - I want to try climbing the ladder."
