Laing O'Rourke wins two major infrastructure contracts

October 9 2007

Laing O'Rourke has been awarded two major infrastructure projects – a state-of-the art power station and an advanced water treatment plant.

The company has been appointed the site execution partner for Origin Energy's new $780 million Darling Downs Power Station in Queensland, the biggest combined cycle gas power station in Australia.

It is also in partnership to construct the $291 million Advanced Water Treatment Plant at Luggage Point.

The plant is part of the Western Corridor Recycled Water Project, the largest recycled water scheme constructed in the southern hemisphere.

Both projects are in partnership with CH2M HILL, a global leader in engineering, procurement and construction projects.

The Darling Downs Power Station project will further strengthen Laing O'Rourke's expertise in power station construction.

It is the company's first foray into the construction of gas fired power stations - one of the fastest growing sectors in Australian power generation.

Work on the Darling Downs Power Station commenced recently and it will be operational by 2010.

Works are now well advanced on the Advanced Water Treatment Plant - Luggage Point which is due for completion in late 2008. Laing O'Rourke and CH2M HILL will design and construct the treatment plant, assisted by sub-alliance partners Connell Wagner and Hatch.

The Infrastructure North team has also been awarded a $12 million contract by Alcan for a further boiler refurbishment on the Gove Peninsula in the Northern Territory.

The project adds to Laing O'Rourke's involvement in the G3 Alliance construction team which was responsible for the expansion of Alcan's Gove Alumina Refinery.
