Upgrade Hornsby Station

January 9 2006

Laing O'Rourke's (the new owner of Barclay Mowlem) newly aligned Infrastructure group was recently awarded the managing contract for the $98 million Hornsby Platform 5 and Clearways project.

This multi disciplined contract involves the construction of a new platform and train stabling at Hornsby Railway Station as well as substantial track additions, retaining walls and bridge alterations.

General Manager for Infrastructure, Bill Killinger, said that his group was in the unique position of being able to offer a comprehensive and integrated transport solution comprising civil, rail and building capability.

'Our experience in providing integrated solutions, our internal staff management capacities and our thorough knowledge of the Sydney rail network gives us the edge in workable solutions that can be communicated quickly and effectively', he said.

The construction work will not affect train services to and from Hornsby station, with the exception of limited weekend services that will be well scheduled in advance. All construction work will be carried out under strict environmental guidelines under monitored working hours.

'The complexity of the project will necessitate careful management and substantial public interfacing', Mr Killinger said. 'We will be evaluating all community liaisons very closely to ensure minimised disruption to commuters and the wider community'.

The project will ensure reduced delays and improved reliability on the CityRail network by separating freight trains and interurban services from suburban services. The project will also improve capacity to terminate and start suburban services at Hornsby.

It is expected that major construction works will commence in late January 2006, with the completion scheduled for mid 2008.
